Former MU football player Marcus King was arrested after a dispute with his girlfriend, Jennifer Holt, on Oct. 1.

Columbia police Capt. Stephen Monticelli said that at about 7 that evening, King and Holt got into a verbal dispute in her apartment.

Holt tried to leave the apartment at about 9:30 p.m., but King prevented her from doing so, Monticelli said.

Monticelli said Holt's attempt to leave the apartment led King to bite her face and grip her neck. King then threw Holt to the ground, police said.

Monticelli said physical evidence of the fight could be seen from the swelling red marks on the back of Holt's neck and bruising on her right arm. Monticelli said he did not think Holt sought medical help.

Officers responded to a call at 11:40 p.m. that night, Monticelli said. He also said that Holt tried to escape a second time between the time of the assault and the call to police.

When police arrived, King was charged with one count of second-degree domestic assault and one count of felonious restraint.

According to court documents, a warrant for arrest was issued on Oct. 2 and was served the next day.

Holt applied for and was served an ex parte that evening, according to Boone County Jail records.

Ex parte orders are often filed as an emergency restraining order.

As of Monday night, King was being held on a $20,000 bail.

A condition of King's bail is that he can't have contact with Holt.

A preliminary hearing has been set for 2:30 p.m. Oct. 31.
