Copper Beech residents complain
Students are concerned about the town homes' mold, bugs and parking.

Residents of the Copper Beech Townhomes are threatening to revolt against their landlords if problems in their units are not remedied.
"I'd love to move, but at this point, I'm assuming it's pretty hard to break a lease," Copper Beech resident Matt Rebackoff said. "We're at least here until the end of the semester, which is a hassle."
Rebackoff, a freshman, is the founder of a Facebook group called "Official Copper Beech Petition (Withhold your rent!)" As of Monday night, the group had 115 members. Although originally the members planned to withhold their rent from Copper Beech if their complaints were not addressed, Rebackoff said a lawyer had advised him against it.
"I was going to just have people withhold rent because it makes me sick to pay $400 a month when it's like this," he said. "The lawyer said that would be drastic and result in legal action. He said to bring in list of complaints, and tell them they need to be fixed."
Columbia Apartments Association President Bonnie Fischer said that before tenants withhold rent from their landlord, it is important to check their lease.
"Read the lease, and make sure that they are following what to do in the lease," she said. "It will be stated in the lease if they can withhold rent in case of a problem or if they can't."
Fischer said often requests need to be made in writing.
"They need to put things in writing for the property manager, and keep a copy for themselves," she said. "If nothing is done, I suggest that they go to the Protective Inspections Department in the city, which issues rental properties a certificate of compliance."
Rebackoff said that in his apartment, there was mold in his closet, and that when he gave the Copper Beech management his list of complaints, they came and cut the piece of wall out and have not yet repaired it. There were also problems with insects in his basement room.
"There were roly-polies and beetles and stuff running around, and they said they're still trying to get a bid on an exterminator," he said.
Despite these problems, Rebackoff said the main issue the residents have is with parking.
"The parking situation is insane," he said. "For the first three or four weeks, there were no assigned spots. It wasn't a big deal except on the weekend. Now there are assigned spots. I live in a three-person townhouse, and we get two spots but have to pay for a third. Two of them are in front of the unit, and the other is across the neighborhood."
Rebackoff said there is no visitor parking, and when he asked what to do if he wanted to have friends over, he was told by management to go get them, have them park on Bearfield Road, double park, or park in the fire lane and hope Columbia police won't see it and tow them.
He said there were also problems with water pressure and holes in the showers.
"Management says what they think you want to hear, and the problems don't get resolved in a timely manner," he said. "They do whatever they can to get off the phone or out of the office."
Rebackoff said he and his roommates have talked to Copper Beech management more than 30 times.
The Web site for Copper Beech Townhomes' corporate headquarters only lists a general information e-mail address as a contact.
Rebackoff said he's not sure what he'll do next about the situation with the apartment.
"I don't really know what to do. We just paid this last month's rent, and I'm not really sure what our options are," Rebackoff said.

Copper Beech refuses to let me sign an individual lease. Although, at the end of this June they allowed certain people to do so in order to fill a few of the last apartments. The manager has avoided my calls for the past week and no one will give me a phone number to the corp. office. I haven't figured out what to do either. Get ahold of a lawyer is my best advice.

If you are considering moving into Copper Beech apts, my suggestion is to run far and fast from this place and don't look back! My son rented from them two years ago. We are now being hounded by a collctions agency for a debt which included painting the entire apartment, replacing the carpet in the entire apartment when there was only one bad spot in the living room area, replacing the drip pans in the stove, and furniture which was of such poor quality, many pieces broke within a few months of my son living there just from normal use. He and his roommates were also charged $50 apiece for turning their keys in late. Our bill is in the thousands for something apartments should do as a matter of course. I agree that it's a scam and something needs to be done. Perhaps someone needs to contact WIS-TV.

Copper Beech's business tactics disgust me. If they didn't "lose" all my important claims and paperwork maybe I could have gone to the BBB and took that place under. They make false charges and fees, lose your paperwork so you have no proof of prior damages, they bully you around with their local utilities connections, people got murdered in my Copper Beech neighbor and the company never notified anyone in the neighborhood of possible dangers. This is the Copper Beech in Indiana, Pa. But from what I've gathered they are all snakes.

My daughter leased in stateboro ga in copperbeech townhomes. She paid her rent for the full term of the lease and when it was time to return the fees paid beyond the lease day, they stated that she didn't have any monies coming back. she had paid for the full month the lease was up around the 14th. During the period her lease was up she had gone to her her town. she returned 6 days after the lease end. they said that they had clean the apartment and threw away all her cloths. Most of her cloths were new winter clothing. copper beech agents were young females. we believe they kept the cloths for themselves. further they had leased the apartment to another person on the 6 day. finally in late november 2010 they called my daughter and told her that one of the chairs in the living room townhouse they rented was damge and she was going to be charged for part of damages along with the other two girls who live there. In late november she received a notice from a collection company demanading 265.00 no specific givens for the billing WE ALL NEED TO GET TOGETHER AND FILED CLASS LAW SUITE. THESE PEOPLE ARE TAKING ADVANTAGE OF OUTTER TOWNERS AND STUDENTS. --- EXCUSE THE SPEELING ERRORS

I live at one of the Copper Beech properties on the East Coast. Each time I go to talk to the leasing manager, the workers always say "She is not in the office," or "She is out on vacation." The funny thing is, I am looking at her sitting in her office while they are telling me these things. Before I moved to Copper Beech, I thought I was going to be living in a great place. Boy was I wrong! Ask the residents questions before you EVER decide to move to Copper Beech. I, however, wound not reccommend moving to the Copper Beech properties in any parts of the United States. Potential residents, beware!!!

I live in the United States, and Copper Beech has wronged me! For all of you who have tried to get things done and Copper Beech would not do anything for you, I have a gift for you! Copper Beech Corporate Office Telephone Number: 814.861.8100 Address:2590 Park Center Blvd State College, Pennsylvania 16801 If you call the corporate telephone number and you press "0" to speak with an associate, it is likely that no one will answer, so you can try the following people at the following extensions: Mary F: Extension 315 Helen Williamson: Extension 313 Benjamin Savabi: Extension 309 George Salimbo: Extension 306 Ask for your regional manager's name and file your complaints. This is what it took for my property managers to do what I wanted them to do and fix the broken items in my apartment! Good luck!

I am currently going through the same type situation with Copper Beech. We have been gone since August, but they took all of our deposit and refuse to give us the Corporate Headquarters number, saying it's a "policy."My two roommates and I signed individual leases, and when our security deposit was calculated, they sent us all one bill with one problem for one roommate on every single one of our bills so we are getting charged triple. It's an INDIVIDUAL lease. On top of that, the bill was actually amusing.Everything was misspelled, one of our names was completely wrong, and they charged us for replacing the entire carpet which in the lease is said is not necessary to do unless severe damages have been done. From what I've heard from other residents and their general rep around Columbia,is that they have a repetitive "scam" going with the carpet,as well as other issues with the security deposit that have never been fully addressed or taken to court.Does anyone have any comments, advise or feedback?Thank you
