Let's talk about sex in North Carolina

Anal sex, oral sex and mutual masturbation are illegal in North Carolina. Performing any of these sexual acts is a crime against nature — a Class I felony, according to a North Carolina state statute.

Cohabitation, in which two unmarried members of the opposite sex live together and have sexual relations for more than two weeks, is another violation of the crime-against-nature law.

Dozens of laws in North Carolina deal with sexual relations, including old common laws that have not been overturned.

Kyle Benton, a senior in mechanical engineering and president of the North Carolina State University chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, said certain laws will not get overturned or changed until someone addresses the issues.

Kids get a treat at KU

Children gathered candy from students in residence halls at the University of Kansas Sunday night as part of the annual Halloween in the Halls event. The Association of University Residence Halls funded the event, and each hall government was responsible for picking a theme.

"There's been a lot of older-looking kids, 13- or 14-year-olds, that are walking around with full pillow cases," said Amelia Kellam, a junior and Ellsworth Hall resident assistant.

Many floors participated in the event by decorating their lobbies for the children. Kellam's floor had a pirate cave for the students to walk through, where treasure chests were filled with candy for them to take. Kellam said she thought Spiderman costumes were the most common for boys, and princess outfits were most popular for girls.

Alleged embezzler gets suspension at U. of Wisconsin-Milwaukee

The president of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Student Association temporarily suspended the government's legislative body speaker Friday.

The suspension stems from allegations of a $10,000 embezzlement of money intended for the Sandburg Halls Administrative Council, which is an independent division of the association.

President Samantha Prahl suspended Student Senate Speaker Russell Rueden, who has been at the center of a scandal involving the alleged use of fundraising money for personal expenses.

UW-Milwaukee junior Michael Gigot was on the student senate with Rueden two years ago and said he is not surprised Prahl decided to suspend him.

"When or if Russ is cleared, I'm confident he will be able to resume his role in student government," Gigot said. "But (Prahl) had to show that she is fully behind this investigation, and she wants to look like she is only interested in providing students unbiased representation."
