USC student newspaper chief resigns

Zach Fox resigned as editor in chief of the University of Southern California Daily Trojan on Tuesday after administrators made clear he would be prevented from taking the position next semester.

According to an e-mail sent to the Daily Trojan staff by Mona Cravens, director of student publications, Vice President of Student Affairs Michael L. Jackson decided Fox's goals were not in line with the description of the job of editor in chief.

Some staff members questioned the administration's motives in refusing to approve Fox. Under Fox's leadership, the Daily Trojan presented Jackson with a letter demanding more transparency and control of its budget.

"It seems like we always have this person not trying to hold our hand but hold us back in a way," sports editor Alex Delanian said.

Student Affairs will hold a special election for the spring 2007 editor in chief position on Friday, after which a new nominee's application will be reviewed for presentation to the Media Board.

Domestic partners might receive benefits in Wisconsin

The University of Wisconsin Board of Regents might request domestic partner benefits when it meets next week.

The regents will discuss the 2007-09 unclassified pay plan request next Thursday, and Regent Chuck Pruitt said Tuesday that there might be discussion of including domestic partner benefits.

Pruitt said the request for domestic partner benefits was included two years ago but was denied.

"Personally, I would hope that we would consider proposing it again on the basis of fairness and competitiveness," Pruitt said.

Wisconsin Rep. Mark Gundrum, a Republican, who authored a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage that was approved in November, said benefits are not completely ruled out by the passage of the amendment.

"If done correctly, the amendment would not preclude those benefits," he said.

Bleaching teeth can cause damage

Dentists across the country advocate teeth whitening and say that it causes no harm.

"There aren't any risks to the teeth," said Denise Webster, a dental hygienist from Hershey Plaza Dental Care. "The only side effect is sometimes sensitivity of the teeth to cold, but that's only temporary."

But some dental professionals disagree with Webster and other practicing dentists.

"There are risks with teeth bleaching as there is with any procedure," said Irwin Smigel, a New York dentist and president of the American Society for Dental Aesthetics. "The problem is that a lot of people over-bleach their teeth."

Smigel said it is important to know that the risks and procedure before starting to bleaching teeth.

Over-bleaching can wear down a tooth's enamel.

"It is important to be very careful and know what you're doing before you have someone attempt, or attempt yourself, to bleach your teeth," he said.
