Fraternity seeking some new members

Dustin Hampton might have an especially stressful finals week.

Hampton is the president of MU's colony of Delta Lambda Phi fraternity, the largest nationwide fraternity created specifically for gay, bi-sexual and progressive men.

The organization needs to submit a list of 10 members and their student e-mail addresses by Dec. 15 before it can be considered for organizational status again.

The colony at MU is on probation for submitting a fraudulent list of 10 members at the beginning of the year.

Vice President Charlie Calvin has said the chapter has four official members.

Calvin directed questions about their efforts to Hampton but said the colony has been in touch with potential members.

"I know that we have people that are interested," he said.

Calvin said the colony has been holding informal social events in an attempt to recruit new members in the past months.

They usually involve inviting prospective members to Memorial Union to meet colony leaders and discuss possibly joining.

Calvin said the organization would have an initiation ceremony during the weeks before winter break, but that further details on the ceremony are kept within the colony and cannot be released.

Hampton said he cannot comment on the matter until the chapter's national office approves.

Calvin said several students have expressed interest in joining the colony, including freshman Matt Reed, but have not committed.

Reed said he was interested in Delta Lambda Phi because "I have come to find out myself, that all the guys' fraternities are stupid, cocky straight boys — people I don't care to associate myself with."

Reed said he is still interested in joining, but as of now, is unclear as to what the process will be.

He said he has not been in communication with any members.

"I don't think that the people running it are very organized," he said.
