Columbia citizens will have a chance to express their views on a proposed ban of smoking in all public places on Tuesday.

"We've asked the health department to look into issues involving smoking in public places in Columbia, and so they're trying to get public input," Columbia Mayor Darwin Hindman said.

The meeting will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Daniel Boone City Building, located at 701 E. Broadway.

The Board of Health will use citizens' comments to decide whether to change any parts of the proposed ban before deciding whether to recommend it to the City Council, according to a news release from the Board of Health.

"We've asked the health commission to investigate this, and sooner or later we'll expect a report from them with a recommendation," Hindman said. "The council is not involved in this issue yet, and I'm staying out of it for right now, too."

There is no timeline of events for consideration of the ban, according to the release.
