The College of Arts and Science recently selected a new director for the Museum of Art and Archaeology.

College of Arts and Science Dean Richard Schwartz appointed Alex Barker to the position, he announced in a news release.

"He was clearly the best candidate in terms of what he knows about how museums are run," said Associate Dean Michael O'Brien.

Barker will take over as the museum's director Monday. He replaces Jane Biers, the museum's interim director.

Barker also has numerous professional contacts and fundraising experience, O'Brien said.

Prior to the appointment, Barker served as the chairman of the anthropology section at the Milwaukee Public Museum.

He also was the museum's vice president for finance and research. He also has worked at a museum in Dallas.

Barker received a master's degree in anthropology from Wichita State University in 1988 and a doctorate degree from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor in 1999, according to the release.

He has conducted many excavations within the country and abroad, including a recent Bronze Age project in Romania.
