Governor Matt Blunt has directed the Department of Revenue to extend the deadline for state income taxes by one month for victims of recent severe weather and tornadoes, according to a news release from the department.

The new due date will be May 15.

"Missouri families, communities, and businesses are wading their way through devastating loss," Blunt said in a news release. "As a state, as friends and as neighbors we must continue to do all we can to help our fellow citizens recover."

Missourians in counties that have been declared Federal Disaster Areas are eligible for the extension.

They should use red ink to write "Severe Storms, Tornadoes and Floods," at the top of all tax forms they submit to the Department of Revenue.

This is not the only tax help storm victims are getting. According to the news release, the Internal Revenue Service has decided to allow victims to deduct storm costs from their federal tax returns for either 2005 or 2006. Also, Missouri has waived the fine for not reporting sales, employer withholding, and excise taxes in the effected areas.

"The governor has taken appropriate, responsible action and shown exceptional leadership by directing us to extend the filing deadlines for areas devastated by this month's severe weather," Director of Revenue Trish Vincent said in the release. "We will work diligently to implement his change and help Missourians impacted by these violent storms."
