MU is conducting a national search to find an associate vice provost for International Initiatives and director of the International Center.

Vice Provost Handy Williamson said he expects to have the position filled by January 2007.

MU public affairs professor James Scott will begin acting as interim associate vice provost for International Initiatives and director of the International Center in September.

As interim associate vice provost, Scott will oversee the internationalization of MU. As interim director of the International Center, he will be a resource for international students and conduit for the university's study abroad programs.

The center helps international students prepare the paperwork necessary for them to attend MU. Once at MU, the center helps students transition to life in the U.S.

The center sponsors programs including American LIFE, which allows international students to have uniquely American experiences, such as enjoying Thanksgiving dinner.

The International Center also sponsors classes for English as a second language to improve students' speaking and writing skills.

The International Center is also in charge of the university's study abroad programs. The center has connections with universities around the world and is able to assist MU students who wish to further their education in an international setting.

This assistance includes an orientation to MU students and their parents for students that plan to study abroad.

The center is also able to assist faculty who wish to work overseas.

Scott will replace James McCartney, who served as director of the International Center for the past six years and who is also credited with helping most of MU's international students return to the U.S. after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

From the top of university administration, MU has made a commitment to internationalization, Williamson said.

"'The world is getting smaller' is not a cliché," Williamson said. "We need to be able to effectively engage with people from different cultures and backgrounds."

Williamson also said he hopes to include an international element in as many courses as possible.

The International Center is housed under the Office of the Vice Provost for International Programs and Strategic Initiatives.

International Programs is also home to the Asian Affairs Center, the Cambio Center and European Union Center. Each center handles a different part of the world and coordinates different exchange programs and on-campus activities.
