Campus police crack down on tailgating

With the Missouri football season set to begin Saturday at home against Murray State, MU has adopted a policy meant to ensure that tailgating occurs in a safer manner this year.

The athletic department and the MU Police Department have worked together for a number of years concerning all facets of safety at football games, including tailgating.

There is one new rule with regards to tailgating this season. According to the football "Fan Guide" section of www.mutigers.com, the new rule states that, "Kegs, beer balls or bulk quantities of alcohol are not permitted in any vehicle or in any of the parking lots surrounding Memorial Stadium."

MU police Capt. Scott Richardson said this is a proactive measure to ensure fan safety, not a response to any specific previous incident.

Rules from previous seasons still apply. Tailgating fans may not take up more than one parking space or block traffic aisles in the parking area. In addition, they must dispose of their charcoal only in designated barrels.

As in past years, campus police will not look the other way if minors are consuming alcohol at a tailgate party. Even for Tigers fans of legal drinking age, drinking remains prohibited in Memorial Stadium and will lead to removal from the stadium if caught.

Colleen Engelhard, assistant director of game operations, said speed-bump style bumpers have been installed in Lot G, which is south of Memorial Stadium, to ensure fans do not take up more than one parking space while tailgating. These bumpers had already been placed in other lots.
