Family donates to veterinary school
Jan. 19, 2007
Years ago, when Tom and Betty Scott brought their injured basset hound, Smiley, to the College of Veterinary Medicine, they said the staff went out of its way to help the family pet who suffered from a broken vertebrae.
To express their gratitude, the Scotts have just given the college a $2 million gift through the university's For All We Call Mizzou campaign. The money will be placed in an unrestricted "excellence fund," open for use at the dean's discretion.
"The staff, students and interns were so kind to us," Tom Scott said. "We wanted to do more to repay the school than just paying the bill."
The Scotts have been supporting the college since the '80s and donated $550,000 in 1996 to found the Tom and Betty Scott Program in Veterinary Oncology. Ten years later, funds from the program helped the college establish a laboratory that will help the school diagnose cancers more quickly and accurately. It will also aid research on how diseases spread.
Tom Scott said he and Betty are enthusiastic about the latest donation after having seen the benefits from their previous contributions.
He said they gave the gift in part because of waning funding for public universities.
"Realistically, the state funding with universities, not just in Missouri but in all states, has decreased over the last few years and will continue to decrease," Tom Scott said. "Universities will have to turn to people for donations to continue to support themselves."
He said private donations are essential to keep valuable programs running, regardless of the amount given.
"The amount of money is not really what's most important," Tom Scott said. "What's most important is getting people to give."
