The MU Police Department is seeking new officers and office staffers to fill positions vacated by officials who have left or are planning to leave the department.

The department posted the open positions on the University of Missouri Human Resources Web site and on the department Web site.

Police Capt. Brian Weimer said the positions are not an expansion of the police force.

One police officer has already left the department and another is expected to leave, he said.

According to the Human Resources Web site posting, the police officer position would pay between $14.95 and $15.81 per hour.

Weimer said the department considers expanding the police department every year.

"That's something we weigh against a number of other things," Weimer said.

The job posting also included some of the requirements placed on MU police officers. According to the posting, applicants for the officer position must have two years of college and experience in a similar position. The officer also must be able to meet the state's police officer certification requirements within one year after being hired.

The posting also stated applicants who are already state-certified police officers and have a bachelor's degree or are able to type would be preferred.

Once hired, officers must be able to qualify with a firearm issued by the department twice every year.

The department is also hiring an evening office staff member responsible for maintaining police records. The office staffer position is a replacement for a staff member who is leaving the department, Weimer said.

Applicants for the office staffer position must have a high school-level education and an additional two years of training, the post stated. The position would pay between $9.74 and $11.05 per hour.

In addition to the two open positions, the department conducts year-round open hiring for campus safety officers, which are part-time employees who support MU police.

According to the MU Police Department Web site, campus safety officers include graduate and undergraduate students.

Campus safety officers are responsible for directing traffic and controlling crowds during special events, residence hall security and other security duties.
