The first thing most people were told the moment they walked through the doors on Saturday for the 14th annual College of Veterinary Medicine Dog Jog was "We're rescheduling."

Outside the Veterinary Medicine Building, in which the participants were gathering, lightning struck and cold rain pattered into puddles. But inside, the jog's co-chairwomen, Claire Beckmeyer and Ashley Welch, stood in chocolate-colored Dog Jog shirts and explained to would-be racers that the jog had been

postponed.

The reason, the co-chairwomen said, was the lightning.

In the dry lobby under bright fluorescent lights, the news prompted mixed reactions.

Nancy Taube, who brought Gracie, her 2-year-old Border Collie-Pointer cross, did not seem to mind. She said she was not looking forward to running in the rain, and she would show up for the rescheduled jog.

"It was more about getting her (Gracie) out and acclimated with other dogs than it was about actually trying to win or anything," said Taube, an administrative assistant at MU's history department. "And it's a good cause."

The cause is two-fold. Some of the proceeds from the jog will go to the no-kill, all-volunteer animal shelter Columbia Second Chance and the rest will be used to fund events for College of Veterinary Medicine's class of 2009. The class is in charge of the event.

In a previous Maneater article, Welch said the event would be held rain or shine. But on Saturday, she said lightning had not been factored into the plans.

"Rain or shine is fine, but lightning is a safety issue," she said.

The rescheduled Dog Jog will begin in the Clydesdale Hall parking lot at 9 a.m. on Oct. 21, Beckmeyer said.
