MSF to offer scholarship

The Mizzou Student Foundation is selling $5 coupon books for special discounts at the University Bookstore this month to benefit a scholarship for working MU students.

The University Bookstore donated the coupon books, and proceeds from their sale benefit the MSF Tiger Pledge Scholarship fund, MSF member Adam Hickey said. Hickey is a former staff member of The Maneater.

University Bookstore, a branch of the Student and Auxiliary Services, began helping MSF raise scholarship funds this year, Student and Auxiliary Services spokeswoman Meggan Cowan said.

Although the fundraising is going through the University Bookstore, MSF is in charge of the fundraising, and all funds go to MSF Tiger Pledge Scholarship fund, Hickey said.

At the end of the semester, the scholarship will go to an MU student who works at least 20 hours a week, Cowan said.

"They are hoping to grow it up and make it a bigger scholarship," Cowan said.

The books cost $5 but will give buyers a minimum of $25 in savings, Cowan said.

MSF members will be selling the coupon books from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday near Brady Fountain and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday in University Bookstore.

At the end of last semester, MSF approached the University Bookstore about partnering to raise money for the Tiger Pledge Scholarship. The coupon books are just one of the fundraisers brought about by the first-year partnership, Cowan said.

At the beginning of the semester, shoppers were given the option to add $1 to the amount of their purchase, and those funds went directly to the scholarship fund, Cowan said.

The MSF raised $866 from the fundraiser, Hickey said.

"We hope with the fundraiser to increase the money going to our scholarship," Hickey said.

On Tuesday, the foundation will observe Tuition Stop Day, a day when members will raise awareness about charitable giving.

At 3:30 p.m. Friday, MSF will offer free pizza at the University Bookstore followed by a gift certificate drawing for textbooks worth $500, Cowan said.
