The Student Union Programming Board will feature MU students' musical talent in a concert series, the first concert of which will be held next month.
The Be the Musician Concert Series was created by the Unions Entertainment Committee. Committee Director Christopher Emmett said the event will let students have a good time and let student musicians display their talents.
"I felt that SUPB would be a great host for additional student music talent showcasing," Emmett said in an e-mail.
This is the first year the concert series has been offered.
"We feel the Be the Musician series is a good new thing for entertainment," Emmett said. "We haven't had a music event yet, and there are a lot of student musicians that haven't been heard. We want students to have as much say as possible."
Stereophonic and Idio, two bands composed of MU students, are signed up to play at the first event on Nov. 15. The event will take place on the first floor of Memorial Union North.
Emmett said there aren't any tryouts, but musicians can contact him if they want to perform.
SUPB allows for students to be part of the events and create the events themselves, Tiger Loving Care Committee Director Aaron Chambers said. The committee is in charge of charitable activities.
"SUPB offers you the chance to get involved," Chambers said. "Other organizations allow you to be involved in events, but SUPB allows you to run and create your events from scratch."
Chambers plans to perform at the Be the Musician series. He said it's a chance to show MU students' musical talent.
"It's a great opportunity for everyone to showcase their music," he said. "Where else can you find this? It's free, too. You can't beat that."
SUPB graduate assistant Toni Koch said the event will serve as a good way for student musicians to be recognized.
"This is a new program that showcases student musicians that wouldn't normally get showcased," Koch said. "Chris (Emmett) developed the whole idea when he interviewed to be the entertainment committee director. He is running the show."
Musicians will not compete with other local bands, and Koch said the event is only open to MU students.
Emmett is planning events to follow the Be the Musician Concert Series that can also allow students to show what they can do.
"For next semester, I'm thinking about opportunities for student comedians, like a stand-up comedy night or an improv skit night," Emmett said. "I'm also considering an opportunity for student rappers where we would have a stage, microphones and a DJ spinning the backing track."
Emmett said the continuation of events depends on students' enthusiasm.
"Depending on the success of these events will determine the continuation of these for next semester," Emmett said.
