A Columbia resident was arrested after he was suspected of assaulting his girlfriend and holding her against her will.

Columbia police were notified of the incident on Oct. 7, according to a news release from the Columbia Police Department.

The suspect, John D. Jones, is currently being held in the Boone County Jail. Jones was arrested on suspicion of second-degree domestic assault, felonious restraint and kidnapping. Jones is held on $5,000 bond for the domestic assault charge and $5,000 bond for the felonious restraint charge.

According to the news release, the woman had been held against her will starting on Oct. 6. Jones transported the victim at knifepoint to the St. Louis metropolitan area where he threatened to drug her and assault her, according to the news release. The nature of the assault was not specified.

The release stated that the victim was not assaulted in the St. Louis area, but the suspect continued to assault the victim in the residence in Columbia, located at the 3100 block of Alpine Drive.

When Jones transported the victim back to the Alpine Drive residence, he barricaded them both inside of the bedroom of the residence, according to the news release.

Columbia police Sgt. Ken Hammond said Jones' family members contacted Columbia Police after learning of the assault. Columbia police officers negotiated with Jones for more than an hour before he exited the residence and was taken into custody.

Hammond said this was a patrol incident not a "call out." Because of the nature of the incident, the SWAT team was not involved.

"She was not transported to the hospital, but she was later seen by medical staff," Hammond said.
