MU's Campus Crusade for Christ will sponsor Ken'ya Run, a 5k run and walk event, Saturday to help fund the building of a school in Turkwel, Kenya.

"I think that it's a great opportunity for us here to be a part of something bigger," Ken'ya Run coordinator Abby Smith said.

People can register for the run anytime between 7 and 8:30 a.m. at Brady Commons on the day of the race by paying a $10 fee, according to the event's Web site. Participants can also register in advance by going to Ken'ya Run's Web site. The run will begin Saturday at 9 a.m.

The 5k course will go through Greektown, parts of downtown Columbia and then back to Brady Commons.

All of the proceeds from the event will go to Get The Word Out, Inc., a nonprofit organization formed by Smith's mother. The mission of the organization is "to bring about an end to the hostilities through peace rallies and the distribution of Bibles," according the Ken'ya Run Web site.

Smith said the organization is "pretty new."

The Web site also said the goal for the school fund in Get The Word Out would be to raise $24,000 to build the school.

Planners of the run are hoping for a turnout of about 250 people, Smith said.

Smith said her mother decided to form the organization after she went on a mission trip to Kenya.

"She just fell in love with it," Smith said.

Smith said her mother's experience led to her getting involved in Get The Word Out and holding the run.

"It's just kind of been a ripple effect," Smith said.

The first 100 students who register for the event will receive a T-shirt. Smith said they still have a few left.
