The MU Faculty Council might adopt a revised transfer admission policy soon, Academic Affairs Committee Chairman Tom Phillips said.

During the Nov. 15 MU Faculty Council meeting, Phillips presented the proposed revisions for the transfer admission policy for discussion.

MU Faculty Council Chairman Frank Schmidt said the new policy would reach a vote during the first meeting of the spring semester.

The council and MU faculty make the official decisions when it comes to the "determination of minimum admission requirements," according to the MU faculty bylaws.

One of the proposed changes is for students who have completed fewer than 24 credits of college-level courses.

The current policy requires those students to meet the freshmen admission requirements, have at least a 2.5 grade-point average and have completed the equivalent of either Math 1100 or English 1000 with a grade of C- or better.

With the proposed policy, transfer applicants would not have to complete Math 1100 or English 1000.

"Even though they have a 4.0 there, if they have failed to take one of those two courses, they can't come here," Phillips said. "Many of our own freshman who come here couldn't transfer to MU, because many of them don't take English 1000 or Math 1100."

The second change proposed is for transfer applicants who do not meet the freshmen admission requirements.

With the new policy, applicants who do not meet the freshman admission requirements would need to have at least a 2.5 GPA and have completed the equivalent of Math 1100 or English 1000 with a grade of C- or better.

The current policy requires that applicants complete the equivalent of both Math 1100 and English 1000 with a grade of C- or better.

"The problem with the current format is that any students who are trying to transfer here are doing one of these courses in the summer session right before they want to start, and they don't find out until mid-August whether they can actually get enrolled," Phillips said. "This is problematic to those who want to get preferential roommates and things like that."
