Women beat Texas State on Saturday

Tiger's win against Texas state sets them on their way to next weekend's tourney.

After being dominated in the paint against Arkansas in a 66-53 loss last Wednesday, the MU women's basketball team reasserted itself Saturday, defeating Texas State, 70-61.

The Tigers were able to hang with Arkansas by virtue of 11 3-pointers throughout the course of the game, but the Tigers would need no such outside help against Texas State.

Missouri shot over 68 percent from the field and never faced a deficit larger than 3 points.

But coach Cindy Stein was not satisfied with the Tigers' inability to finish off Texas State.

"We felt very fortunate to win this game," Stein said in an athletic department news release. "We kept letting them back in, but our kids played hard and played well."

The Tigers were able to fix some of the mistakes that plagued them against Arkansas.

In that game, Missouri was outscored in the paint, 36-8, and finished the first half one-for-20 from 2-point range.

But Missouri and Texas State drew even in the paint, with each team scoring 22 points inside.

Freshman forward Shakara Jones fueled the Tigers en route to her second double-double of the season. Jones finished with 20 points and 13 rounds.

Junior guard Alyssa Hollins added 18 points, and sophomore guard Amanda Hanneman, who missed the season opener due to injury, scored 13 points.

The win sets Missouri off on the right foot as they head to this weekend's CenturyTel Tiger Tournament at Mizzou Arena.

Missouri opens the tournament Friday night against Mississippi Valley State.

Should Missouri win, the Tigers would face the winner of the early Friday game between Alcorn State and Stephen F. Austin.

If Missouri loses, the Tigers would play the loser of the early game.

The tournament is part of a six-game homestretch for the Tigers, who have home dates with UM-Kansas City and Illinois in mid-December before traveling to Charlottesville, Va., for the Marriott Cavalier Classic on Dec. 28 at Virginia.
