Police seek rape suspect

Columbia Police are investigating a report of a forcible rape Sunday morning, according to a CPD news release.

Police officers went to a residence in the 600 block of McBaine Avenue after a 28-year-old woman reported she had been sexually assaulted in her home.

According to the release, the assailant entered the residence and assaulted the woman. She reported the rape to police immediately after the assailant fled the residence at approximately 11:40 a.m.

The woman said she didn't know the assailant, according to the release.

The suspect is described as a 6-foot black male with a medium build. He is believed to be in his 40s.

According to the release, the assailant was believed to have been wearing a tan Carhartt-brand work coat with no hood, dark-colored jeans and tan work boots at the time of the assault.

According to the Columbia Police Uniform Crime Report, 23 cases of rape were reported to the Columbia police in 2006. Of those reported, 17 were cleared by arrest or dismissal.
