Editorial:
Give the Hearnes Center fee to SFCIC
Published Feb. 23, 2007
Thursday night, a vote by the Hearnes Center Committee about whether to surrender the remaining $1 million from the Hearnes Center student fee to the Student Fee Capital Improvement Committee, where it could be accessed by more student organizations in need of fees, ended in a tie or, if ex officio votes are counted, the proposition failed.
The proposition clearly should've been passed. The SFCIC is a fund open to student organizations that can make proposals to fund things they need. The proposals are generally small and can be anything from buying jerseys and goals for the men's club soccer team to equipment for STRIPES. These funds could also be spent to buy furniture in an expanded Brady Commons. These small but important contributions to small but important organizations are more important than hording money for the vague purpose of the upkeep of the Hearnes Center.
The Hearnes Center fee was created to pay for the Hearnes Center. That duty, of course, is done, and the extra money still belongs to students. If the funding is given to SFCIC, it will return to the students. In short, the money will be able to serve its purpose.
