Forums to aid president search

Feb. 27, 2007

When UM system president Elson Floyd announced his resignation Dec. 13, the Board of Curators was in the process of adding three new members.

With the new curators in place, the board has presented its presidential search firm, Baker Parker and Associates, with a list of qualities it would like in a new president.

The curators will hit the road in March and conduct six public forums around the state to discuss their search for the institution's next president.

"The Board of Curators has begun a nationwide search to identify and recruit the best possible person to become the University of Missouri's next president," Don Walsworth, board chairman, stated in a news release. "We seek an exemplary leader of national stature to guide the university during an era marked by great challenges and unlimited opportunities for higher education."

The public forums will be held at the four UM system campuses: UM-Rolla, UM-St. Louis, UM-Kansas City and MU. Forums also will be held in Springfield and Portageville, home to the Delta Research Center.

"It's important to the Board of Curators to have a dialogue with the many stakeholders of the university," UM system spokesman Scott Charton said. "It's also important for the stakeholders to hear from the curators about the leadership qualities it's looking for."

Charton said the board would be represented by at least a few of its members at each forum.

The forum in Columbia is at 4 p.m. March 19 in the Reynolds Alumni Center. Charton said the UM system is developing a Web site that will give the public up-to-date information about the presidential search.

"We hope to have it running this week," he said.

The site would include presidential nomination forms, the board's leadership qualities and some history and background of the UM system.

Advisory group members for the presidential search are also in the process of being selected. The advisory group will be comprised of eight faculty members and former curators from the UM system, who will be nominated by the chancellor at each campus.
