A teenager was injured in a drive-by shooting Sunday evening near an intersection a block from Hickman High School, according to a Columbia Police Department news release.
Police responded to a report of multiple gunshots fired near the intersection of Third Avenue and Grand Avenue at approximately 7:35 p.m. Sunday. When they arrived, the victim had been transported to University Hospital for a leg injury, Columbia police Capt. Stephen Monticelli said.
The victim described the shooter only as a black male who might have been driving a black Dodge Neon, according to the release. Monticelli said the victim could not give a more detailed description.
"The police did not get a lot of cooperation there," he said.
According to the release, the victim was walking when the vehicle drove by, and the driver opened fire. According to the victim, the suspect fired numerous shots, but the victim was only hit once in the leg. Police could not identify the type of weapon used.
The shooter then fled in the vehicle, which was last seen traveling north on Grand Avenue.
The victim was taken to the hospital, but he sustained a non-life-threatening injury, according to the release.
Monticelli said he did not know if the shooting was random or if the victim was a predetermined target.
"They appeared to be targeting him, but for unknown reasons, according to him," he said.
The victim is a 17-year-old male, according to the release. Monticelli said he did not know if the victim was a student at the school.
Hickman High School officials declined to comment about the incident.
