$500,000 sale adds to For All We Call Mizzou
March 9, 2007
The For All We Call Mizzou fundraising campaign continues to grow and passed $777 million, due in part to a $500,000 sale of land on Thursday. MU graduate Turner Vemer donated 40 acres of land to MU to honor his late wife Elizabeth. MU in turn sold the land to create $500,000 worth of scholarship funding. The goal of the campaign is to raise $1 billion by December 2008.
"Turner Vemer talked about what he wanted to happen when he gave the land to the university," Development External Relations Director Beth Hammock said. "We're really aware of what our donors want their money to be used for, and we respect that."
The proceeds from the sale of the Vemer farm will establish the Elizabeth Vemer Memorial Minority Scholarship Fund in the MU College of Human Environmental Sciences, according to an MU news release. Vemer served as a faculty member in the college until her death in 1991.
"Mr. Vemer wanted to continue the work his wife started because she was only able to do it for 11 years," Hammock said.
According to the release, Elizabeth Vemer was known as an expert on adolescent sexuality and health and as a community action facilitator for youth.
"Elizabeth believed that with a little encouragement, young people can achieve their dreams," Turner Vemer stated in a news release. "I hope this scholarship encourages Missouri's most promising students to attend MU and dedicate themselves to helping families and teenagers."
Hammock said the scholarship would most likely be granted to students majoring in Human Development and Family Studies.
She said a group of people will work out the requirements and the amount of the scholarship, and with the amount of money, multiple scholarships could be created.
"Elizabeth Vemer cared deeply about education and Missouri's youth," Chancellor Brady Deaton stated in a news release. "Her dedication to minority families will live on through this generous scholarship fund."
