Softball defeats Wichita State in doubleheader at home
The Tigers will enter the Big 12/Pac 10 Showdown standing a little taller after a doubleheader sweep of the Wichita State Shockers. The two victories on Wednesday brought the team's overall record to 16-9.
In the opener, the Tigers defeated the Shockers 8-5 after getting off to an early start thanks to junior Amanda Renth. Renth hit a solo home run in the first inning, bringing her total to six this season. During the fourth inning, the Tigers scored four runs, largely courtesy of Jen Bruck and Sarah Stringer. Jana Hainey threw a scoreless final inning to notch the save in the first outdoor game of the year.
In the second game, Stringer sparked the Tigers with her second home run of the doubleheader, a three-run blast in the third inning. A sixth-inning double by junior Micaela Minner ignited a five-run rally to break the game open. The Tigers beat the Shockers 10-3 with Jana Hainey and Alaina Jacobson each providing a scoreless inning in relief of starting pitcher Megan Dennis.
The Tigers are 4-0 this season against Wichita State.
The Tigers next game is in Tempe, Ariz., at Arizona State University. The Tigers will take on Washington and Arizona State as part of the Big 12/Pac 10 Showdown.
Tigers baseball has perfect home record
A 4-2 victory against the University of Louisiana-Monroe Wednesday night improved the Tigers' record to 5-0 at Taylor Stadium this season.
Facing an early deficit after a first inning error, the Tigers got themselves back on the map with a three-run double from Kyle Mach in the bottom of the first.
ULM scored again in the second inning, but the Warhawks were unable to break through Missouri's pitching thereafter, as they were held to two hits for the game.
Stephan Holst returned from arm surgery to strike out three hitters in three innings as the Tigers' starting pitcher.
Wednesday also marked the first pitching appearance by sophomore Scooter Hicks. Hicks threw three scoreless innings of one-hit ball.
Missouri added an insurance run on a sacrifice fly by junior Evan Frey to provide the final margin. Freshman Kyle Gibson pitched a flawless final two innings for the save.
The Tigers will next face Texas State in the Dallas Baptist Classic on Saturday. They will then face Dallas Baptist at home later that evening.
The next home game is March 14 at Taylor Stadium against Saint Louis University.
