Kelly misses cut, MU golf

finishes 14th

MU senior John Kelly did not win a green jacket this weekend at the Masters nor did he advance to the third and fourth rounds of play in Augusta, Ga.

Kelly was present for the festivities and saw Zach Johnson win his first green jacket in the Augusta National clubhouse.

Kelly carded a 77 on both days for a two-day total of 154.

Only the top 60 golfers advanced to play on Saturday and Sunday with Kelly narrowly missing the cut by two strokes.

Kelly did beat Richie Ramsay, who complied a two-day score of 156.

Ramsay beat John Kelly in the U.S. Amateur, which is how both qualified for the Masters.

Kelly tied former U.S. Open Champion Ernie Els, who also did not advance to the third and fourth rounds.

While Kelly was at the Masters, the MU golf team was at the Boilermaker Invite in West Lafayette, Ind., where senior Shawn Jasper tied for fourth, helping the team to a 14th place finish.

Jasper shot a 75 and 73 for a total of 148, but his teammates didn't have as successful a tournament.

Sophomore Peter Malnati finished second for the Tigers, tying for 52nd place with a score of 156.

Freshman Bud Reynolds and sophomore Ryne Fischer finished tied for 64 with scores of 159.

Junior Beau Crawford rounded out the Tigers and finished tied for 73rd with a score of 163.

The team next travels to Stanford, Calif., for the U.S. Intercollegiate.

Baseball takes 2 of 3 in Manhattan, Kan.

Sophomore Rick Zagone was named co-Big 12 pitcher of the week for his performance Saturday when he led the Tigers to a 3-0 victory against Kansas State.

The Tigers went 2-1 on the weekend after opening the weekend shut out 12-0.

It was the first time the Tigers had been shut out since April 2006.

MU had runners on base in five of the first six innings but was unable to plate any runs.

The loss went to sophomore Aaron Crow and was his first loss of the season.

On Saturday, the Tigers were able to shut out K-State 3-0 with the help of Zagone, who pitched his second complete game in his last three starts.

Zagone had a no-hitter going into the ninth inning and was only two outs from recording it when he gave up a single.

Zagone struck out 11, setting a new career high, and is now 6-0 on the season.

It wasn't until the seventh inning that the scoreboard recorded any runs for either team.

Senior John McKee, who led off the seventh, hit his fourth home run of the season for the first run of the game.

Junior Lee Fischer also helped the Tigers with two RBIs, driving junior Jacob Priday and freshman Trevor Coleman in on his single.

In a tight game Sunday, the Tigers came up on top as they beat the Wildcats 7-6 in a 12-inning game.

Coleman hit a leadoff home run in the 12th inning, which tied him for the team lead in home runs with four on the season.

The Tigers were down by two in the ninth inning when junior Brock Bond hit a two-run triple, tying the score at six.

Junior Scooter Hicks got the win, pitching the final 2.2 innings, allowing one hit and no runs, making him 3-0 on the season.

MU next heads to Saint Louis University on Tuesday before a three-game home series against Texas A&M.
