April 13, 2007

With the College of Veterinary Medicine Open House, which serves to recruit prospective students, approaching, the college has also announced the finalists for the veterinary medicine dean position.

College of Arts and Science Dean Michael O'Brien and John Dodam, associate dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, are the co-chairmen of the search committee for the position and have worked together to select five finalists that could potentially fill the position.

"I know I speak for the rest of my colleagues on the committee when I say we are dedicated to finding the very best person possible to lead one of the nation's premier colleges of veterinary medicine," O'Brien stated in an MU news release.

The finalists include people from around the country, including Virginia Tech, the University of Florida and The Ohio State University.

The list includes professors, researchers and deans from different areas of study including microbiology, veterinary medicine and physiology.

The search committee members said they expect to have all five candidates on campus within the next few weeks, and at that time, the committee will present its recommendations to Provost Brian Foster.

"We will continue to seek input from stakeholders across the state during the selection process," Dodam stated in the news release.

Dean Joe Kornegay stepped down in October 2006 to take a position at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

Before the final list of applicants was narrowed to five, the search committee formulated characteristics sought in a new dean and began to assess credentials of prospective candidates.

According to the College of Veterinary Medicine Web site, the search process was strictly confidential.

The committee plans to have a new dean in place at the beginning of the 2007-2008 academic year.
