Craft Studio earns $6,000 in revenue

April 17, 2007

The Missouri Students Association/Graduate Professional Council Craft Studio collected more than $6,000 in revenue this year.

Members of the MSA credit new Craft Studio Coordinator Kelsey Hammond with the increases in both revenue and student participation.

"She's done a tremendous job getting interested students," MSA President Rachel Anderson said.

Michelle Compton, former Craft Studio Task Force member, said the Craft Studio experienced a complete makeover in the way it is run with Hammond as coordinator.

"She's working really hard to keep really good records," Compton said. "Kelsey runs it like a business."

Last summer, the task force worked to improve the Craft Studio.

Compton said members researched other craft studios, looked at potential classes and developed a marketing scheme.

Anderson said the accessibility of the Craft Studio helps bring in new students.

"She's targeted students differently," she said. "It helps that someone's always in there."

Compton cites advertising and a variety of classes as reasons for the studio's success this year.

"A lot of classes have been a huge hit," she said. "There's also been a lot of marketing with the classes."

MSA allotted more than $80,000 to the Craft Studio this year. Compton said these student fees act as a subsidy.

"Students can do something they normally aren't able to afford," she said.

MSA Senate introduced an act at their meeting last week to replace the Craft Studio's graduate assistant with an office support staff position.

The act was tabled because its author was not present at the meeting to answer questions.
