Downtown Columbia was crowded Sunday afternoon as citizens learned about sustainable living and environmental protection at the city's Earth Day celebration.
The events took place in three areas of downtown and occurred at various times from noon until 7 p.m. on Sunday. Eco Avenue was a sustainable living fair that occurred on Elm Street around the intersection with Eighth Street.
"People know they must do more to protect our planet," Eco Avenue coordinator Johann Holt stated in a news release. "And now on Eco Avenue, they can find out exactly how to do so with easy tips to change their lives and live more sustainability."
Another area, called West Village, was a family-oriented area around Sixth and Elm streets. It contained many activities for children, including a living history exhibit and several musical acts.
The Seventh Street Stage was the third venue where several local musical and theatrical acts from around mid-Missouri performed. The acts all related to environmental topics, including use of natural resources.
Several groups and organizations, including Sustain Mizzou and Columbia Parks and Recreation, sponsored the event.
According to a City of Columbia news release, an after-party was held at Mojo's at 7:30 p.m. for the performers from the Seventh Street Stage to "come jam together."
