Curators to meet in Rolla this week

April 3, 2007

Since the UM system Board of Curators met in January, a stockpile of issues has accumulated, giving the board much to discuss in its meetings this week at UM-Rolla.

UM system spokesman Scott Charton said the board should decide an interim president to replace outgoing system President Elson Floyd.

Floyd announced his resignation Dec. 13 and will leave the UM system to take a job at Washington State University.

Also on the agenda is the subject of intellectual pluralism, which was on the agenda for the January meetings but was never discussed.

A bill in the House, sponsored by Rep. Jane Cunningham, R-Chesterfield, has ignited discussion among higher education leaders about the policies and procedures each school takes to promote intellectual diversity.

The Finance and Audit Committee will discuss the basis Board of Curators' budget, and tuition and fees for the UM system's next school year. After the committee's discussion Thursday, it will take its recommendations to the entire board Friday afternoon.

One of the longest-standing items of debate at MU will finally experience a vote at the meeting of the Physical Facilities Committee when members discuss the possibility of changing the name of the General Classroom Building.

Student leaders at MU have pushed for a name change to GCB since 1989.

Another name change that is on the agenda for the External Affairs Committee is the possibility of renaming UM-Rolla.

Charton said this will be Floyd's final board meeting as system president, and the board will pass a resolution in his honor.

The meetings will begin Wednesday with an orientation for newly appointed curators Bo Fraser, Warren Erdman and Judith Haggard.
