MU police are attempting to contact individuals whose vehicles were damaged while parked in the SG-4 commuter parking lot outside of the Hearnes Center.
Police are investigating a witness's report of vandalism and damage to vehicles on the lot on March 22. The witness told police a group of three to four individuals were hitting and throwing items at the vehicles.
MU police Capt. Brian Weimer said police inspected nearby vehicles for damage but said it was difficult to determine whether the damage they found was a result of the incident.
"Our officers are making contact with people to see what damage was there and what damage might have occurred," Weimer said.
Weimer said police attempted to secure the damaged vehicles and left business cards on nearby vehicles with the department's contact information so victims could file a report. He said officers would also attempt to contact the vehicles' owners by checking license plates against registration databases.
So far, four reports of damage to vehicles have been filed with police.
Several items were stolen from a Ford vehicle parked in the lot, including a specially made BMX bicycle, a box of Magic: The Gathering game cards and a PlayStation video game system memory card. The bicycle was later recovered and returned to the owner.
The passenger side window of a black Chevrolet Cavalier was smashed and glass shards were found on the ground outside the vehicle. The owner of the Cavalier said nothing was missing from inside.
The owner of a Honda wagon said the driver's side window was smashed. According to the report, musical equipment including a car amplifier and bass speakers were missing. The stolen equipment is valued at a total of $1,200.
A gray Saturn's driver's side window was smashed. The owner reported several homemade CDs were missing, but he said he wouldn't miss them.
