Softball sweeps No. 9 Texas
The softball team swept the No. 9 Texas Longhorns this weekend with a 6-4 win on Saturday and a 1-0 win on Sunday.
Freshman Julie Silver had three RBIs on the weekend. On Saturday, she went 1-3 with a two-RBI double. The next day, her sixth-inning single drove in the team's only run.
Tiger coach Ehren Earleywine said he was especially happy about Saturday's win because it came against Longhorn ace Megan Denny.
"It was great to see this team battle back against such a strong opponent," he said. "Megan (Denny) is a very strong pitcher and for us to get seven hits off of her is an accomplishment. I was pleased with the way the team came back and also fought hard in the field."
Denny did not give up a run until the sixth inning when she gave up six runs on four hits and was taken out of the game.
Longhorn sophomore Kacie Gaskin was at the plate with the bases loaded in the seventh inning of the second game, but Tiger junior Jen Bruck struck her out to end the game.
The team, which has finished its non-conference schedule, improved its Big 12 record to 3-0. Its overall record is 27-17.
Bruck pitched two complete games in two days. She has recorded the win in four of the team's last five victories. She had eight strikeouts in the first game.
Her second game was her first complete shutout of the season and her sixth complete game of the season. The two wins improved her season record to 11-4.
Junior Amanda Renth, who Earleywine said was on fire after the team's games at Louisville earlier in the week, cooled a bit. She had one hit and one RBI in the two games and didn't draw any walks. She has been intentionally walked 10 times this season.
Next up for the team is a two-game set on Friday and Saturday at Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Okla.
Golf finishes 15th in Arizona
The women's golf team traveled to Tempe, Ariz., this weekend, where it tied for 15th in the Ping/ASU Invitational.
Freshman Michelle Morgan was the team's leader. She finished with a three-round total of 227 strokes, tying her for 44th as an individual.
Sophomore Chelsea Schriewer tied for 51st with a score of 230, second among the Tigers. Her Sunday score of 74, two over par, was the team's best one-round score of the weekend. She competed only as an individual, not as part of the team competition.
Filling out the Tiger lineup were freshman Julia Potter, junior Madde Augustsson and senior Stephanie Wavro, with scores of 236, 240 and 246 respectively.
Sophomore Ellen Hoeper finished tied for 55th with a score of 231.
The hometown Arizona State Sun Devils won the competition with a score of 851. Second-place UCLA finished with 873 and the Tigers finished with 928.
The team will not compete again until the Big 12 Conference Championships, scheduled for April 16-18 in Waco, Texas.
