LGBT organizations plan drag show

Following the celebrations of Black History Month in February and Women's History Month in March, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community and allies will observe Pride Month in April.

The LGBT Resource Center, Triangle Coalition, the Missouri Students Association and the Graduate Professional Council are co-sponsoring several events throughout the month.

"The goal of Pride Month is to increase visibility for the LGBT Center and open up dialogue about issues people might be nervous or scared to talk about otherwise," Triangle Coalition Vice President Kelley Robinson said.

Robinson, also co-founder of Gamma Rho Lambda sorority, said the mission of her sorority includes making the university a place for all students.

"Right now, this university is not a place that all students feel comfortable at all the time, and we're hoping this month will help change that," Robinson said.

One major event will occur April 13 when the four organizations will sponsor a professional drag show in Jesse Auditorium.

The Triangle Coalition will also sponsor a discussion about LGBT history at MU during the day.

"We want to provide education and entertainment for all of our events this month," Robinson said.

The National Day of Silence/Breaking the Silence is on April 18 and is another important event, Robinson said.

It is a campus-wide effort to remember all groups who have been silenced by oppression.

Robinson said the month has been advertised in many ways.

"We really want to get the message out and make this a successful week," Robinson said.
