Two Tigers named tops in Cape Cod League
Junior Missouri pitcher Aaron Crow was named the best player in this summer's Cape Cod Baseball League, the most prestigious and talented summer college baseball league in the country. He had the league's best ERA at 0.67 and reached 98 miles per hour on the radar gun multiple times. Crow was actually a late addition to the league and signed with the Falmouth Commodores in early May a few weeks before the season. Sophomore pitcher Kyle Gibson was named the league's top freshman after logging a 1.12 ERA, also for Falmouth. The Commodores had five of the top 10 players in the league and advanced to the league finals, where they were swept by Yarmouth-Dennis. One out of every six current Major League Baseball players spent at least one summer in the Cape League.
Former receiver Ekwerekwu survives first cuts in K.C.
Former Missouri wide receiver Brad Ekwerekwu, who looks to make the Kansas City Chiefs roster as an undrafted free agent, survived the team's first round of cuts on Wednesday. Teams had to cut down to 75 players, and eight Chiefs were let go. NFL teams still have to pare down their rosters to 53 by Saturday. Ekwerekwu is battling Chiefs player Dwayne Bowe and former Arena League star Bobby Sippio for the fifth receiver spot. Former Tiger stars Brian Smith, a defensive end, and Xzavie Jackson, a linebacker, appear likely to make the rosters of the Jacksonville Jaguars and Cleveland Browns, respectively.
