MU cross country woman's team wins in Nashville

The Missouri cross country teams shined this past weekend, as the women won the Vanderbilt Commodore Classic title in Nashville, Tenn., with a score of 55 points. The men, who entered only freshmen in the tournament, finished third in their group with 76 points.

Freshman Kinsey Farren was the first MU woman to cross the finish line in the five-kilometer race, coming in fifth overall in 18 minutes, 24.91 seconds in her first collegiate race.

Four Missouri men finished in the top 20 of the eight-kilometer race, led by a ninth-place finish by freshman Ben Brammeier, a Ballwin native who transferred from Florida. He finished in exactly 26 minutes and was followed immediately by MU freshman Phillip King.

Soccer goes 0-2 for the weekend

The Missouri soccer team fell to the first- and third-ranked teams in the country this weekend in Palo Alto, Calif. The No. 20 Tigers lost Friday night to the No. 1 Stanford Cardinal 3-2, losing on a header by Stanford junior Allison Falk in the 88th minute.

MU had tied the game in the 77th minute when sophomore Michelle Collins scored her fourth goal of the season. But MU couldn't hold the lead.

Again on Sunday, the Tigers hung close against the No. 3 Santa Clara Broncos. The two teams were tied at one goal each until the 73rd minute, when senior Tina Estrada hit the ball off MU goalkeeper Mallory Forst's back for the game-winning goal.

Tiger basketball teams plan Mizzou Madness

Men's and women's basketball coaches Mike Anderson and Cindy Stein announced their plan to hold Mizzou Madness to kick off the 2007 season at 9 p.m. on October 12. The Midnight Madness-style event will be held at Mizzou Arena immediately following the football game between Rock Bridge and Hickman high schools at Faurot Field. Admission will be free.

"Mizzou Madness is a great way to officially open up the season, and it's an event our players really enjoy," Anderson said in a news release. "Even more than the basketball, our guys really look forward to the fan interaction that an event like Mizzou Madness provides. It's a lot of fun for everyone involved, and the proceeds go to a great cause that supports our neighbors here in mid-Missouri."
