The MU Police Department is trying to apprehend a man involved in a break-in and the theft of several MFA Oil credit cards, according to an MUPD news release.

The suspect has been using the stolen credit cards at several Break Time convenience stores in Columbia and Tipton, MU Police Capt. Brian Weimer said.

The credit cards were stolen from a vehicle parked in the SG-2 parking lot, located southeast of the Hearnes Center on campus, between Dec. 24, 2007 and Jan. 2. The stolen MFA Oil Company credit cards were used to acquire more than $4,000 in gasoline between different Break Time locations.

Break Time security cameras caught pictures of the suspect, which were released to the public on Tuesday.

Vehicle break-ins and credit card thefts both happen annually, but it is not something that happens routinely on campus, Weimer said.

He said MU students, faculty and staff can protect themselves from vehicle theft.

"Park vehicles in a well-lit area," Weimer said. "Don't leave valuables out where they can be seen. Make sure they are locked in a safe, secure location."

Credit card holders should monitor their monthly credit card statements for unauthorized charges.

"Make sure you have the number of the credit card company and report it immediately if it is lost or stolen," Weimer said. "Without a name there is no reason to believe the suspect is a MU student. That's why we are asking for help."

Anyone with information regarding the theft is asked to contact MU Police Detective Vernon Gerling at (573)884-2605 or Crime Stoppers at (573)875-8477.
