Seniors honored for leadership

Last night, the sidewalks leading from the Reynolds Alumni Center to the Francis Quadrangle were lined with luminaries shining gold light in honor of this year’s Mizzou ‘39, and each of the 39 seniors awarded with the honor walked up the steps of Jesse Hall holding a candle as the ceremony began.
Mizzou Alumni Association Student Board Vice President of Internal Relations Miranda Leppin and Alumni Association Executive Director Todd McCubbin welcomed the seniors, commending them for their achievements in academics, athletics and activities at MU.
The ‘39 lit their candles as Leppin read their names. They then joined the members of AASB in singing the MU alma mater. At the end of the ceremony, the seniors were invited to a reception with appetizers at The Heidelberg restaurant.
The Mizzou ‘39 award was created in 2005 to honor seniors who have shown outstanding leadership skills and service to MU.
“There’s an application process, and there’s a panel of faculty that go through the applications,” Leppin said. “In 1839, the founders of the University of Missouri worked hard to manage the university here in Columbia, showing dedication and leadership, so that’s what we base the award upon.”
This is the fourth year the program has been in place, so for seniors honored this year, the program began when they were freshmen.
“It’s kind of a new tradition,” Leppin said. “We’re having a small, tight knit ceremony tonight to bring together all of the seniors who’ve won the award.”
Mizzou ‘39 inductee Lauren Gress received the award due to her involvement in a variety of activities at MU. Gress has participated in Greek life, theater and several journalism activities. She said she also has enjoyed her experiences with volunteer organizations and KOMU.
“It’s a big honor to know that everything you’ve done is being acknowledged and that you’re part of this new tradition,” Gress said.
Senior Julie Ann Stuppy received the award for her leadership in activities and athletics. Stuppy has been a part of the gymnastics team at MU and has gained service and leadership experiences through MU athletics. Last year, she served as vice president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council and this year serves as co-president.
“I’ve also done a lot of service through the athletic department, including reading at elementary schools and working with the Ronald McDonald house,” Stuppy said.
Stuppy has also been actively involved with activities through the School of Journalism and reports for KOMU.
“Ever since I’ve been at Mizzou, they’ve stressed academics, athletics and community service,” Stuppy said. “It’s so nice to be honored and recognized for involvement in those areas.”
The Mizzou ‘39 will also be invited to a formal banquet with faculty members to further honor their achievements.
