Editorial: Student voters should be informed, reminded

Oct. 14, 2008

Over the past few weeks, student political organizations and the Associated Students of the University of Missouri visited classrooms, spoke in Speaker's Circle and essentially spread the word all over campus about the voter registration deadline, encouraging students to register and to make their voices heard this November.

All of their energy and efforts resulted in record voter registration, making the youth vote a possibly significant factor in this year's election and manifesting that MU students do value democracy and their chance to have a say in the future of our country.

This is an excellent achievement on the part of these groups, but they shouldn't consider their jobs done yet - Election Day is several weeks away, and there's still a lot of work left to do.

Registering isn't enough. It is also important to make sure students are ready to vote, equipped with the information they need to choose a candidate that best fits their personal political preferences and that will do what they feel would most positively affect our country.

In addition, it's important that all registered voters really do go out and vote on election day. Polls will be held in locations as convenient as Memorial Union and members of political organizations and ASUM should remind students throughout the day of where polling places are located throughout Columbia and how important it is that they vote.

This year, college students have a substantial chance to make our voices heard and see the candidate we want lead our nation for the next four years. The effort to register voters, which topped records of past election years, was fantastic. Continuing that effort through education and voter turnout is vital to bringing out the youth vote. Let's make sure we do just that.
