After two nights of preliminaries, five skits advanced to finals in the Stripes in the Spotlight talent competition.

Homecoming skits began Monday with six Greek pairings performing. Another seven followed Tuesday.

All of the skits highlighted a famous MU alumnus. Some of the alumni chosen include NASCAR driver Carl Edwards, actor Tom Berenger and Beetle Bailey comics creator Mort Walker. Each skit contained two dances and a song. The skits included a Homecoming element.

Many of the in-between acts included different singers, bands, dancers and a lone stand up comedian.

"The in-between acts really make the show," sophomore Marina Thomas said.

Pi Kappa Phi fraternity member Nate French said his favorite in-between act on Tuesday was the dance routine by Outer Limits. Despite technical problems with its music, the dance group was well received.

The fraternities and sororities got to pick a theme for their skit. Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, Delta Tau Delta fraternity and Kappa Sigma fraternity used MTV's The Real World as inspiration for their skit "The Real World: Mizzou." One of the finalists, Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity and Delta Chi fraternity, used the idea of the Colorado Buffalos destroying MU's Facebook network as a means to ruin Homecoming.

A lot of hard work goes into making the skits what they are, Chi Omega sorority dance director Brittany Dickemann said. The fraternities and sororities practiced for more then 30 hours while preparing for the skits, Kappa Alpha Order member Blake Busick said.

"Last weekend was called marathon weekend because we practiced in the morning and afternoon on Saturday until the game as well as all day on Sunday," Delta Gamma sorority member Laura Goede said.

Many members of the skits were happy to have the chance to make it to finals.

"The house went berserk when we found out we got to move on," Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity skit director Randy Prywitch said.

Others were glad to have people to watch their performance again.

"I think that overall today's performance was 10 times better then last time. We all had more confidence," Alpha Delta Pi sorority member Christina Kavanaugh said.

Kappa Delta sorority member Christy Garofalo said she did not know who her biggest competition would be since the finals included the best of the best.

"It is anyone's game," Garofalo said.

Making it to finals was not the end of the road for the groups, however. Mike Manson, Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity Homecoming liaison, said the actors and dancers in the skit "Internetwork Siege of Destruction" would need a perfect performance to win Thursday.

"We made a couple of mistakes in our last performance," Manson said.

FarmHouse fraternity member Ryan O'Hara said he planned to emphasize his reactions and having more fun on stage.

"The audience will see it," O'Hara said.

In between performances, audience members chanted and cheered. Delta Gamma sorority member Katie Francis said their sorority made spirit sticks and brought flashlights to show their chapter letters on the wall.

There was a competitive vibe though between pairs of sororities and fraternities.

One of the skits went as far as making fun of its competition. In "Mike Shannon: the Musical" by Kappa Delta and Phi Kappa Theta fraternity, they pointed out how they did not use the concepts of time traveling, kidnapping Truman the Tiger or ruining Homecoming. This was also one of the finalist skits.

Another skit, "Beetle Bailey Saves Mizzou" used flashlights in their dance, spelling out MU at the conclusion of the dance performance.

During intermission on Thursday, dance directors Eric Wilken from Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and Cathy Josendale from Alpha Phi sorority said their biggest competition for finals would be Chi Omega sorority and Alpha Delta Pi sorority, calling their skits and dances fantastic.

The winning skits will not be announced until Sunday at midnight on the steps of Jesse Hall.
