The Black Culture Center began its annual Black Culture Week on Sunday with a dinner featuring soul food and a discussion about black culture.
Event organizer Deniece Christian said she wants students to gain knowledge of black history through the events planned this week.
Christian said the entire week was planned before school started, and she looks forward to the rest of the events.
On Monday, guest speaker Minkah Makalani was scheduled to speak about conflicts among black people from different parts of the world, but the event was canceled.
There will be a discussion Tuesday about how black people around the world are often not perceived as black people.
On Wednesday the African Student Association will host "Heartbeat of Africa," and students and faculty will be able to try African foods, learn about African fashions and watch traditional African dances.
Freshman LySaundra Campbell said she looks forward to this event the most.
"I want to see the different styles of clothing and see how diverse they are, because in America black culture isn't that diverse," Campbell said.
On Thursday there will be a dialogue about intercultural fighting, and Friday will end the week with a game night where students can play spades, dominoes and have fun with their peers.
"I think it is important for students to know that black culture is so much more than what we see in America," Campbell said.
