Letter to the Editor:

Rooted provides Christian guidance for students

Published Nov. 11, 2008

When I came to MU this fall, I wanted to get plugged into a church or campus ministry, ASAP. Immediately. Stat. If I put it off, if I slept in that first Sunday morning, I knew I'd never find a church home. Last year, God taught me how important it is to trust in His plan for my life - and because God shapes my life so much, I didn't want to put God into storage with my high school letter jacket and old gaucho pants (ew!) when I came to college.

Luckily, I did find an awesome church and a great Bible study group with some of my best friends. Nevertheless, several of my friends and I think church-shopping and ministry-hopping could go even more smoothly.

So I'd like to introduce you to a new Christian ministry at MU: Rooted, a fall retreat for incoming students! Rooted seeks to glorify the Lord in every aspect of its existence by serving the incoming freshman class and showing them the first glimpse of the body of Christ at MU.

This fall, Rooted will put on a retreat for incoming MU students. The retreat will introduce new students to the body of Christ at MU. Through speaker sessions, praise and worship, fun and fellowship, students will build lasting relationships through the common bond of Jesus Christ.

Rooted will represent Christian ministries across campus, giving freshmen an opportunity to talk with members from Christian organizations and churches across Columbia. There are many strong Christian groups on- and off-campus, and all groups will be emphasized equally.

Right now, our 12-member executive board is preparing for the retreat - and we hope you'll get involved, too. Counselor and prayer team applications will be available within the next three weeks, and we are hoping to select both counselors and team members from ministries across campus.

The Rooted executive board would love to hear from you! Please e-mail me if you have any questions or if you would like an application. Applications for counselors and prayer team members are due Nov. 21. My e-mail is eaj427@mizzou.edu, or you can e-mail Gwen Daniels at gfaithd@gmail.com.

The exec board would love to get to know you, too! We'll have an informational get-together at the Starbucks on Ninth Street on Thursday, Nov. 13 at 6 p.m. and on Wednesday, Nov. 19 at 4 p.m. You can ask us all about Rooted and pick up an application if you're interested. (Added bonus: The Starbucks holiday drinks are now available. I wait all year for the eggnog latte. Mmm!)

We are so, so excited about Rooted. We hope you'll get Rooted at MU, too!
