At about 10:40 p.m. Wednesday, a high voltage electrical switch went out, causing parts of campus to lose power and Internet.

A power outage occurred in buildings such as Jones and Lathrop residence halls and others around Providence Road and Stadium Boulevard.

Campus Facilities spokesman Phil Shocklee said incidents like this are uncommon at MU.

"It was a piece of mechanical equipment," Shocklee said. "With a piece of equipment there are occasionally unscheduled failures."

Shocklee said Campus Facilities crews had power restored in about two hours.

Terry Robb, director of the Division of Information Technology, said the power failure caused the Internet to go out in half of MU's buildings.

The Internet access issue was resolved later Thursday and all MU computer systems were functioning.
