Robbery suspect scared off by victim

The suspect appeared to be preparing to steal when he fled.

Police are searching for a man who broke into a 50-year-old woman's home Thursday night.

At about 7:15 p.m. the suspect forced entry through the front door of the residence, located on the 2400 block of Garden Drive. A Columbia Police Department news release stated that he entered through the front door after he was unable to enter through the back.

Once he entered the residence, the suspect encountered the victim in her bedroom.

The suspect then fled from the scene after the victim screamed when she saw him. Another witness said he saw the suspect while he was fleeing the residence.

According to the release, it appeared the suspect was preparing to steal from the residence before to he saw the woman who lived there.

The suspect was described as a black male, wearing a tan coat, gray and brown sweatshirt and blue jeans. Police said he is about 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs 240 pounds.
