Student assaulted, robbed
Feb. 29, 2008
MU police have not released any new information since a Clery release e-mail about an assault near Stafford Hall was sent to MU students.
A female student told MU police a man pushed her into her car, assaulted her and ran away with her purse on the morning of Feb. 24, according to an MU Police Department news release.
“He fondled her on the outside of her clothes while in the back of her car, in addition to then grabbing the purse and running off,” MUPD Capt. Brian Weimer said.
The release stated the man ran toward Gardner-Hyde, which was a residence hall north of Stafford Hall. The Mid-Campus Housing Project now occupies the area.
According the MUPD Daily Activity Summary, the criminal offenses are second-degree robbery and sexual abuse.
According to Missouri Revised Statutes, “A person commits the crime of sexual abuse if he subjects another person to sexual contact by the use of forcible compulsion.” It is a class C felony but can sometimes be a class B felony.
Second-degree robbery is defined as the forcible stealing of property. It is a class B felony.
People with information about the crime are asked to contact MUPD or Crime Stoppers at (573) 875-8477.
Weimer said community participation is important in solving crimes.
“It’s critical,” he said. “To get the community involved is critical to not only campus safety but to community safety. Anything that gives us more information greatly assists us.”
He also said reporting crimes is important because police officers will not know about crimes and cannot do anything about them unless the crime is reported.
“It also greatly assists the community by keeping them informed,” he said.
According to the Campus Safety and Crime Report, which contains statistics released by MUPD about crime rates on campus, two cases of robbery were reported on campus in 2006.
The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act is a federal law that requires colleges and universities to release information about crime on and around their campuses.
This Clery release was the first of the year. MUPD released four Clery releases in 2007.
