A Mercury Mariner sits on its rims Monday after having the tires slashed in Sunday’s vandalism spree in Virginia Avenue Garage. Police arrested four individuals on suspicion of involvement in the crime.

MU Police Department officers arrested four men on suspicion of vandalizing 40 cars in Virginia Avenue Garage in early Sunday morning, police said.

“They were all intoxicated,” MUPD Chief Jack Watring said.

He said the cars had slashed tires, broken antennas, door panels kicked in and were keyed.

One of the men, Tyler Eckert, 19, was arrested on suspicion of two felony charges of first-degree tampering and two misdemeanor charges of second-degree tampering.

The other three men, Zachary Wayhart, Matthew Feldewerth and James Young, all 19, were given summons on suspicion of being a minor in possession of alcohol.

Watring said the three men were not arrested on suspicion of tampering because the incident is still under investigation.

He said students whose cars were vandalized will be able to seek restitution. He also said students whose cars were vandalized should contact their insurance agents.

Freshman Evan Oliver said he found his car was vandalized later that day.

“Somebody had keyed the back door of my car — it’s an SUV — all the way to the middle and the right side just through the paint,” he said.

He said he does not know any of the men arrested.

He also said he is going to have to replace the back door of his car.
