Woman arrested for purse
March 18, 2008
Columbia police arrested a woman in relation to a recent string of purse robberies at Columbia grocery stores, according to a news release from the department.
Seven purses were stolen between Feb. 29 and March 8, CPD Capt. Zim Schwartze told The Maneater in a previous report.
Emily B. Hampton, 34, was arrested on suspicion of two counts of stealing and one of fraudulent use of a credit device.
CPD officers searched Hampton’s home on March 13. The release stated they found items that implicated her in several theft cases.
The release stated Hampton was released to the Department of Corrections.
Department of Corrections spokesman Brian Hauswirth said Hampton is on probation after she pleaded guilty to a third stealing-related offense.
She was in prison from Nov. 2, 2006 to March 22, 2007, at which point she was placed on probation in the Boone County probation district.
“Any arrest is a violation of probation,” Hauswirth said.
He said if she is charged, Hampton will be interviewed by her probation officer, who will then make a report to the court.
“The court will take appropriate action,” he said.
Hauswirth said Hampton was convicted of stealing in 2002.
The judge sentenced her to two years in prison, but suspended the execution of the sentence and placed her on two years of probation, which she completed. She did not serve prison time for that crime.
CPD was unavailable for comment.
