Mays vows to refuse election results
March 19, 2008
Missouri Students Association Senate Speaker Jonathan Mays said he would not accept the certified results of the MSA Senate elections because some students were unable to vote using the electronic ballot e-mailed Monday afternoon.
According to MSA bylaws, the Board of Elections Commissioners must present the Senate speaker with the results of the election. Mays said because all students were unable to vote, this election was not "legitimate."
"In any election where there are students who can't vote, the results cannot be certified," he said. "It's not a legitimate election."
BEC Chairman Geoffrey Grammer said the election should be certified because the original e-mail announcing Senate elections included the disclaimer "Please contact bec@missouri.edu with any problems or voting related questions."
"Technically, we contacted all the people who said they couldn't vote," Grammer said. "For him to not to certify the election isn't fair, because we've contacted everyone who contacted us."
According to MSA bylaws, anyone seeking to contest an election for election law violations must file their complaint with the BEC. If the complaint is against the BEC, the complaint must be filed with the Student Court.
Grammer said the board is still working on counting the paper ballots cast and will finish counting them Wednesday or Thursday.
He said around 30 people contacted the BEC because they had problems casting an online ballot.
According to a message sent to some students who expressed problems with voting, students were able to cast paper ballots in A022 Brady Commons until 9 p.m. Wednesday. The message also states that students can cast e-mail ballots if they contact the BEC.
Grammer said only BEC executive members would see paper ballots.
