Women’s basketball loses
The MU women’s basketball team got double-digit points from three different players, but fell to Kansas State on the road Saturday, 81-52.
Missouri (9-19, 2-13 Big 12) received stellar efforts from its top three scorers, led by junior Alyssa Hollins with 15 points. Freshman forward Shakara Jones and sophomore forward Jessra Johnson contributed 14 and 11 points, respectively.
However, the Tigers had no response for Kansas State’s Shalee Lehning. MU held Lehning to two points in the February meeting with Kansas State at Mizzou Arena. But Saturday in Manhattan, Kan., Lehning exploded for 21 points and 11 rebounds.
MU held a 15-14 lead with 9:41 remaining in the first half, but Kansas State (20-8, 12-3) responded with a 15-0 run and entered halftime with a 17-point lead.
Missouri finishes out the regular season on the road against Colorado on Wednesday before heading to the Big 12 tournament in Kansas City on March 11.
Softball sweeps BU
Junior Lindsey Ubrun hit two home runs including a grand slam as the Tigers beat Boston University 12-6 on Sunday to close out the Tiger Invitational.
MU (15-6) won all five games against tournament opponents over the weekend. The Tigers scored 10 runs in the third inning on Sunday, despite having just four hits. Missouri earned two of those runs in the third inning when BU sophomore reliever Megan Currier threw back-to-back illegal pitches with Tigers on third base. A runner advances one base on a pitcher’s illegal throw.
BU scored five of their six runs in the fifth inning, but couldn’t pull closer than within six points.
The Tigers won three games over BU on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and also beat South Dakota State on Friday and Saturday.
Next weekend, MU plays six games in Tampa as part of the Under Armour Invitational, hosted by South Florida.
