GPC asks centers to collaborate

The Graduate Professional Council passed a resolution at its meeting Tuesday night supporting more collaboration between the Student Health Center, the Counseling Center and the Wellness Resource Center.
GPC President Jennifer Holland said that members of GPC, the Missouri Students Association and the Student Fee Review Committee have expressed concerns during discussions with representatives from the Student Health Center that there is too much overlap between the three centers’ services. She said the resolution is a means to eliminate confusion among students by encouraging the three centers to work together to ensure their services do not overlap and also to promote what services each center offers.
Holland said one option for how to promote services is the creation of a Web site that would outline what services each health entity offers. She said the Web site would serve as a first step to holding each center accountable for their services.
Holland said Student Health Center Director Susan Even has been receptive to the idea and that Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Cathy Scroggs’ office has offered to pay for and maintain a Web site that could be up as early as July, in time for Summer Welcome events.
The council also passed a resolution to support a new Office of Disability Services policy that would allow some disabled students to be considered full-time students if taking only nine hours as an undergraduate student or six hours as a graduate or professional student. According to the current policy, a graduate student must carry a minimum of nine hours to be considered full-time and an undergraduate must take at least 12 hours, regardless of disability status.
To close the meeting, nominations were taken for next year’s GPC executive board. Nominations also will be accepted at GPC’s next meeting on April 1, when the council will elect the new board.
