An MU senior was struck by a vehicle on late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning in Panama City Beach, Fla.

Mike Maniaci, a business administration major and member of Phi Kappa Theta fraternity, was taken to Bay Medical Center in Panama City after the collision and needed emergency surgery to relieve internal bleeding in his brain.

Maniaci remains in critical condition in Bay Medical Center’s ICU as of Monday.

The response to Maniaci’s situation in Missouri has been positive, with over 2,700 joining a Facebook.com group called “Prayers for Mike,” started by Maniaci’s sister Jenny Maniaci, a 2007 MU graduate.

“I believe in the power of prayer and feel the more people we can join in prayer, the better,” Jenny Maniaci said in the group description.

In addition to the online support, prayer sessions were held at the Queen of All Saints Church in St. Louis on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

According to the United States National Library of Medicine, the damage caused by internal bleeding in the brain depends on the amount of swelling and that the outlook for victims ranges from complete recovery to some permanent loss of brain function.

“The neurosurgeon believes that most likely the critical period for brain swelling is over,” Jenny Maniaci wrote Sunday afternoon on Facebook. “This week we will be praying that the brain swelling goes down and Mike shows purposeful movement.”

The family is also working on setting up a trust fund for his medical costs.

Generic Nightclub is hosting a fundraiser on April 5 at 9 p.m. for the fund.

Phi Kappa Theta president Mitchel May said the fraternity will be collecting money from its members, alumni and other members of the Greek community who are close to Maniaci. He said they would begin today or Wednesday.
